[G] Goodnight Irene Again, Pat Maloney

[G] Irene took that old brass ring, she bought at the rummage sale. [C] Shined it up and slipped it over the [G] moon.
[G] Now it hangs like the kitchen light, she won’t turn it out at night, [D] ‘Til the old man’s sleeping and the [C] last kid [D] has come [G] home.

[G] Irene has a fruitcake tin she keeps her odd buttons in,
[C] Some she let me take and some I stole,
[G] What she swears is some old rhinestone thing, I know to be a diamond ring
[D] And I will have myself a piece of [C] all of [D] Irene’s [G] gold.

The [C] rain danced off the red tin roof, the [G] cat hid underneath the porch The [D] old man slammed the door as he came [G] in,
The [C] radio played “Good Night Irene”.
She [G] said she never liked that song.

I [D] will not sing “Goodnight Irene” again[G] [BREAK]

[G] Irene had a portrait done of her and [G] eorge when they were young. [C] It hung up beside the sacred heart.
[G] It’s hung so long it left a square. She still sees it hanging there, [D] Though time has made the colors fade and [C] pulled the [D] frame [G] apart.

[G] Irene has a sweepstakes stub she likes to hold and rub. [C] She swears someday she’s gonna win first prize. [G] When she does, we’ll get some heat upstairs,
She’ll reupholster the old man’s chair, It’s been

[D] Ages since he passed away, but it’s [C] still his [D] in her [G] eyes.
